Living in Rotterdam

As you can see on our website Rotterdam is a great place to live. Perhaps you are also thinking about moving to Rotterdam. Here are some hints and tips for those who would like to rent an apartment (or a house) in Rotterdam. A good site to get more information about living in Rotterdam is wonen.Rotterdam.nl which is operated by the urban planning and housing department of the city of Rotterdam, de dienst Stedebouw + Volkshuisvesting.

Renting in Rotterdam

Depending on your income you'll be looking for subsidized dwellings or something in the "vrije sector" (free sector). This last category designates the more expensive houses and you will need a higher income to rent them. You don't need permits (e.g. huisvestingsvergunning) and there are no waiting lists for the "vrije sector". The monthly rent is higher than fl 800,-- for max. 4 rooms and fl 973,-- for max. five rooms. These houses are mostly available through estate agents and private owners. Some housing societies (woningbouwverenigingen) also have "vrije-sector" housing.

Estate agents

On the site of the dienst Stedebouw + Volkshuisvesting of the city of Rotterdam you can find a list of all the estate agents that have accommodation for rent in Rotterdam. The best way to find out which estate agent has apartments or houses in the part of town you're interested in is by calling them. If you find one that seems interesting visit them to get an overview of what they have on offer and to fill out a registration form. Most agents don't ask a fee to register, you pay them once you rent something. Usually fl 300-400.
Two estate agents that have a lot of apartments in the centre, waterstad and Kop van Zuid are Kamerbeek and Dynamis ABC. Check out their websites to get an idea of what they've got.
These two agents are not the only ones and they are also not better or worse than others, I mention them specifically because I know they have a lot on offer.

Hints
If you haven't heard from an agent for a while after sending in your registration form it is worth wile to give them a call. Every week if you are in a hurry. It might be a bit pushy, but it works.
In general appartments and houses here are not furnished, there is nothing on the floor (just concrete) or the walls, no curtains, not even sockets for the lamps.

In a hurry
If you need something in a hurry it might be interesting to go to Direkt Wonen. On this site there's a button "aanbod indicatie" , if you click on it you'll get an indication of what's on offer right now. Gemeubileerd means furnished and GWE means gas, water & electricity. They also have furnished appartments.
Also interesting is Match Makers.
